You can’t turn your brain off and stop overthinking. When you’re still, your brain thinks of all these terrible things that might happen. You KNOW it’s not rational, and these things probably won’t happen, but what if they did?! It’s enough to make you feel crazy. It may be interfering with your ability to get through the day, causing panic attacks at work, and putting a strain on your relationships. If this sounds like you, it may be time for counseling.
Through regular counseling, you can learn how to manage your racing thoughts and overcome your anxious thought patterns.
You want to be kind and generous, offering help when you can. But you want to be able to limit your involvement without feeling guilty and selfish. You want to take care of yourself and not feel bad for it — maybe even feel good about it?! Learning how to say ‘No’ is a tough skill to learn. You may feel afraid that you will destroy your relationships if you start standing up for yourself. But therapy can help with that!
Through counseling, you can learn how to feel great about the help and support that you do offer others since it will come from a healthier place and happier you.
The trauma you survived as a child has stayed with you your entire life. You may feel inexplicably angry, sad, or anxious. You may not understand the choices you make or the thoughts you have. Surviving trauma as a child shapes who we become as adults, but it doesn’t have to control you any longer. You can break free from the patterns you learned to protect yourself as a child, and start living a life full of joy and free from anxiety.
Let’s work together to process your trauma, learn healthy coping skills, and finally heal.
Evangelical culture glorifies the denial of self in almost every aspect of life: our time, our emotions, our finances, … bodies, intuition, personalities, hobbies, sexuality – it’s endless. At the same time, evangelical denominations generally intend to operate from a place of love and compassion. You may have left the church and no longer believe in those doctrines -but still experience motional pulls or blocks in understanding with who you are apart from your former religious practices.
‘Exvangelical’ is a term that has come to refer to people who no longer subscribe to their former evangelical beliefs. Anxiety and dissociation are common experiences of evangelicals and exvangelicals alike.
I work with exvangelical women to uncover ways their former beliefs may still hold them back in self-understanding or reaching their goals, or contribute to their past or current mental heath concerns. Together, we sift through the deeply rooted old beliefs to find what elements still resonate, and what needs to be released.
What even are feelings, and how do I make them go away?
So, feelings or emotions (or feels, or feefees) are how we know how we’re doing in the world. The bad news is, the more we work to make them go away, the harder it is to feel the ones we WANT to feel. The good news is, helping people figure out how the hell to feel feelings and deal with them, is what I love doing most. I, possibly like you, hate it when I feel pissed or hurt. It’s not comfortable!!! But I have some skills I can tell you about, and we can try some of them out together, and many of them you’ll try out on your own, and see what fits. As an added bonus, we can brainstorm ways to help you decide when to let yourself work with big feelings, and when it’s more helpful to shift your attention if the heavy feels seem to be sucking you into a black hole. Just remember, feelings aren’t facts, and emotions always pass.
Are you just going to tell me to take a deep breath and count to ten?
I will most likely help you work on finding ways to work with your breathing as a sort of reverse psychology way of working with your emotions. Our “feelings” (emotions) are directly, physically, biologically, literally connected to the different organs in our bodies, and that definitely includes our lungs. Most of the time we breathe on autopilot, without a second thought, and we only pay attention to our breathing when we’re panicking or livid or so excited it feels like panicking. I can help you learn as much or as little as you want about how all this works, and help brainstorm ways to start using your breathing as just one of various tools to manage emotions in a way that feels better to you.
Do you do EMDR therapy?
Yep! I finished EMDR training in early 2018 and currently in ongoing consultation to work toward certification.
Wait. What is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s less talky than talk therapy usually is. Long story short, it involves thinking of different elements of a really challenging event or experience, and noticing how your thoughts or emotions about it shift as your eyes move back and forth. We can chat more about it during a consultation call if you’d like.
